How Far in Advance Should You Book a Boat in High Season in Punta del Este?

Paddle boarding and swimming next to the private boat anchored at Gorriti Island

If you are planning your trip to Punta del Este in December, January or Carnival, ideally you should book your boat at least 3 or 4 weeks in advance. For long weekends and the second half of January, it is worth getting in touch even earlier, a month and a half or two months ahead, because boats fill up fast. If you are going on a weekday or have flexible dates, you can ask with less notice, but it never hurts to secure your spot.

At Virazon we work with private boats with a captain, which means the boat is exclusively for your group. It also means that once a date is taken, it is taken: we cannot put another family or group on the same slot. So if you already have a date and want to go out on a boat, we recommend getting in touch as soon as possible so we can check availability and confirm your trip.

Why does it get so busy in high season?

Punta del Este is one of the most popular summer destinations in South America, and boat trips are one of the experiences most sought after by families, groups of friends and companies. December and January fill up with visitors from Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Brazil and other countries, and many of them plan their holidays months ahead.

The most popular trips, such as the boat trip to Gorriti Island to celebrate birthdays or bachelor parties, are usually the first to sell out. The same goes for the Isla de Lobos boat tour, the most iconic trip in the area and the one everyone wants to do at least once.

Many groups also come to celebrate a special occasion: sweet fifteens, 30th or 40th birthdays, bachelor and bachelorette parties, company outings. And since most of these celebrations are planned for the summer, demand is concentrated in just a few months. Add the fact that our fleet has limited capacity, and you can see why booking early is key.

What happens if I book at short notice?

Booking at short notice does not mean there will be no availability, but it does narrow your options. The boat that best suits your group may already be booked for that date, or the time you wanted may no longer be available. And if your group is large, we may need more time to assign the right boat.

If you message us a few days before and we still have availability, great: we confirm and you go out. But if the date is already taken, you will have to reschedule or choose another day, and in high season that can be tricky. Especially on long weekends such as New Year, Epiphany (Reyes) or Carnival, when everything fills up very quickly.

Booking early also gives you more room to organize everything else: catering if you want finger food on board, coordinating with the rest of the group, putting together a playlist, letting your hotel or rental know. Everything is easier when you do not leave it to the last minute.

What information should you have ready when you ask?

When you message us to book, a few details help us send you the quote and availability quickly. You do not need to have everything nailed down, but it helps to know roughly what you are looking for.

Basic information we ask for

  • Approximate date or range of dates you want to go out
  • How many people are going (adults and children)
  • What type of trip you are interested in: Isla de Lobos, Gorriti Island, fishing, Solanas, sailboat, etc.
  • How many hours you want to be on the water (from 2 hours to a full day, depending on the trip)
  • Whether you want catering or will bring your own food and drinks

With that information we put together the proposal, send you the price of the boat and confirm availability. If you are not sure which trip to choose or how many hours to book, we are happy to advise you on WhatsApp. For example, if it is your first time and you cannot decide between a fishing trip and the boat trip to Solanas and Punta Ballena, we will explain the differences and recommend one based on your group.

What if I want to go sailing or do something more relaxed?

Sailboat rental also fills up in high season, although it usually has a bit more flexibility because the trips are for smaller groups (2 to 12 people). If you are looking for something more intimate, romantic or relaxed, the sailboat is an excellent choice, and we still recommend asking at least two or three weeks ahead.

The trips to Solanas and Punta Ballena, which are longer and calmer, are also very popular with families with children or groups who want to spend the day on the water at a gentler pace. These trips usually have good availability on weekdays, but on long weekends they also sell out quickly.
