Can You Land on Isla de Lobos? Why the Island Is Seen from the Boat

Sea lions on the rocks of Isla de Lobos with the lighthouse behind, Punta del Este

No, you cannot go ashore on Isla de Lobos. The island is a National Park and home to one of the largest sea lion colonies in South America, so it is protected and access is restricted. The Isla de Lobos boat tour is done from the boat: you sail all the way around the island to see the sea lions, the historic lighthouse and the birds, and then anchor nearby so you can swim with the sea lions around you, if sea conditions allow. It is an incredible experience that you do not need to set foot on the island to enjoy.

If you are thinking about going out on a boat during your visit to Punta del Este, here is what you need to know about how Isla de Lobos is visited, what you will see and why the trip is done entirely from the water.

Why can’t you land on Isla de Lobos?

The main reason is that Isla de Lobos is a protected natural area with National Park status. It lies about 8 kilometers off the coast of Punta del Este and is a refuge for two species of pinnipeds: the South American fur seal and the South American sea lion. The colony that lives there is one of the most important in the region, with thousands of animals that breed, rest and live side by side on the island.

Landing is prohibited to protect the animals and their habitat. Sea lions are wild animals that need peace and quiet, especially during the breeding and pupping season. Human presence on the island would cause stress, disrupt their natural behavior and put both the animals and people at risk.

In addition, the lighthouse on the island, built in 1858, is still in operation and is part of Uruguay’s historical heritage. The island is not set up to receive visitors. For all these reasons, the tour is done exclusively by boat, sailing around the island and keeping a respectful distance that lets you watch without interfering.

What does the Isla de Lobos boat trip include?

The trip lasts about 3 hours in total. It leaves from the Port of Punta del Este and after roughly 45 minutes of sailing you reach the island. Along the way you already get to enjoy the scenery, the breeze and, with luck, a sighting of dolphins or seabirds.

Once in the area, the captain sails all the way around the island so you can see the sea lion colony up close. You will see them resting on the rocks, playing in the water, squabbling over territory or simply sunbathing. You will often hear their grunts and calls mixing with the sound of the sea. You will also see the lighthouse, which has stood for more than 160 years, and different species of birds that nest on the island.

After the loop, the boat anchors near the island. If the sea is calm, you can jump in and swim with the sea lions around you. They are curious and often come closer. It is a unique experience that respects the animals, because you are in their territory and they decide whether to come closer or not.

Can you combine it with other islands on the same trip?

Yes, if you have more time you can combine Isla de Lobos with a boat trip to Gorriti Island, which is much closer to the port. At Gorriti the boat anchors off the island so you can swim, eat on board, listen to music and enjoy the day with your group. It is a good way to make the most of the trip if you are with family or friends and want a fuller route.

What to bring on the Isla de Lobos trip

Since the trip is done entirely from the boat and you may get in the water, we recommend bringing the following:

  • Swimsuit and towel
  • Sunscreen and a cap or hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Comfortable clothes and a light jacket (it can get cool on the water)
  • A camera or phone with a charged battery for photos
  • Water and some snacks if you like (you can also book finger-food catering on board)

All boats carry life jackets for adults and children. The exact meeting point at the port is sent when you confirm your booking, and the trip is on a private boat with a captain, meaning the boat is just for your group.

Who is this trip for?

The Isla de Lobos trip works for all kinds of groups. It is ideal if you are traveling with children, because seeing the sea lions up close is something they love and will not forget. It is also an excellent choice if you are with friends and want to do something different from a beach day. Many people choose it for birthdays, bachelor and bachelorette parties or simply to spend a different day on the water.

It is also an interesting activity for company groups: a relaxed outing with a good atmosphere that lets people connect outside the office. And if you love nature and marine wildlife, this is one of the most authentic trips you can do in Uruguay.

If you prefer something calmer with more time at anchor, the boat trip to Solanas and Punta Ballena may be more your style. And if you like heading out early and trying your luck with a rod, there is the fishing trip on the banks near Gorriti Island.

We also offer sailboat rental with a captain, where you can take part in the sailing if you are interested, or simply relax and enjoy the wind and the quiet of the sea.
