Is It Safe to Swim with Sea Lions at Isla de Lobos?

Family on a paddle board with sea lions swimming nearby at Isla de Lobos

Yes, it is safe to swim with sea lions at Isla de Lobos as long as you do it from the anchored boat, at a sensible distance, respecting the animals’ behavior and following the captain’s instructions. You do not go ashore on the island because it is a protected area, so the experience consists of getting into the water from the boat while the sea lions swim around you, which makes it a controlled and safe activity for the whole family.

On the Isla de Lobos boat tour from the Port of Punta del Este, we first sail around the island so you can see the colony up close, the historic 1858 lighthouse and the birds that live there. Then we anchor near the shore so that, if sea conditions allow, you can get in the water. Here we explain what the experience is like, what precautions to take and when it is best to do it.

How close are the sea lions when you swim?

The sea lions come quite close, especially the younger ones, which are curious. You may see them swimming past a few meters away, diving and resurfacing near you. The distance varies with the day, the season and the animals’ mood, but in general it is common to have them around you while you are in the water.

The captain anchors the boat in an area where the sea lions tend to be active, without disturbing the colony resting on the rocks. This keeps the experience natural: they come if they want to, and you stay close to the boat the whole time. There is no forced contact and the animals are never cornered, which makes it more respectful and also safer for everyone.

Life jackets are included for adults and children, so you do not need to be an expert swimmer to enjoy the moment. The idea is to float calmly, watch and let the sea lions’ curiosity surprise you.

When can you get in the water at Isla de Lobos?

You can get in the water when the sea is calm and the captain judges that conditions are safe. This depends on the wind, the waves, the current and visibility. On days with a southerly wind or a big swell, swimming is not possible, but you still sail around the island to see the sea lions from the boat.

The best season for swimming is from spring to autumn, when the sea is usually calmer and the water temperature is more pleasant. Boats also go to Isla de Lobos in winter, but the water is colder and sea conditions can be more variable. Either way, the trip runs all year round and is always worth it, even if you do not swim.

If you have booked and the sea is not cooperating on the day of your trip, we reschedule or refund your money. We never force a trip if conditions are not right.

What precautions should you take when swimming with sea lions?

The main precaution is not to try to touch the sea lions. They are wild animals, and although they may seem tame, they can react if they feel invaded. Always keep a respectful distance and let them come to you if they want. The captain gives you instructions before you get in the water.

Other practical tips:

  • Always stay close to the boat and within sight of the captain.
  • Avoid sudden movements or loud noises in the water.
  • If a sea lion comes too close or keeps approaching, calmly move back toward the boat.
  • Wear water shoes if you have them, because the bottom may be rocky.
  • Use biodegradable sunscreen to protect the marine ecosystem.

The island is a National Park and one of the largest sea lion colonies in South America, home to South American fur seals and sea lions. Respect for the environment and the animals is part of the experience.

Is it safe for children?

Yes, it is safe if they are comfortable in the water and always have an adult beside them. Many families do this trip and the kids are fascinated. Life jackets for children are included, and the captain makes sure everyone is fine. If your group includes very young children or kids who are not used to the sea, you can choose the boat trip to Gorriti Island, where the water is calmer and the anchorage more sheltered.

What the full Isla de Lobos trip is like

The trip lasts about 3 hours in total. We leave from the Port of Punta del Este and sail for about 45 minutes to reach the island, which is about 8 kilometers off the coast. On the way you already see the coast from a different angle and, with luck, dolphins.

At the island, we sail all along its shore so you can see the sea lions resting on the rocks, playing in the water and jostling for space. You also pass the lighthouse, one of the oldest in Uruguay, and the seabird colonies. Then we anchor at a good spot so you can get in the water if the sea allows, or simply enjoy the scenery and take photos.

The boat is private with a captain, meaning it is just for your group, whether you are 4 people or more. You can bring your own food and drinks, or add finger-food catering on board if you prefer. You can also combine this trip with Gorriti Island on the same outing if you want a longer trip.

Other trips from the port include the boat trip to Solanas and Punta Ballena, ideal for watching the sunset, or the fishing trip if you want a different experience on the water. There is also sailboat rental if you enjoy sailing.
