A Day on a Sailboat in Punta del Este: No Sailing Experience Needed

The sailboat's deck with the sun over the sea

Yes, you can spend a whole day sailing in Punta del Este even if you know nothing about boats. Our sailboat rental includes a captain, who takes care of everything: the sailing, safety and the route. All you have to do is get on board with your group, relax and enjoy the sea.

If you want to take part in the sailing, you can. Many of our clients use the trip to learn the basics of handling the sails, take the helm for a while or simply watch the captain at work. But if you would rather lie back sunbathing, listening to music or chatting with your friends, that is perfectly fine too. The day is yours, and we plan it the way you want.

What is a full day on a sailboat with a captain like?

A full day starts when you arrive at the Port of Punta del Este at the time agreed when the booking was confirmed. The captain welcomes you on board, shows you around the sailboat and explains where the bathroom is, where to store your things and the basic safety rules. You feel at ease from the start because it is a private boat: no strangers, just your group.

Then we head out. The captain raises the sails if conditions allow, and the sailboat starts gliding over the water without the engine noise of a motorboat. It is a unique feeling: all you hear is the wind in the sails, the water against the hull and the gulls. During the trip you can choose what to do. Some groups head straight to anchor in a bay to swim and eat on board. Others prefer to explore the coast, pass Casapueblo or sail near Gorriti Island. You can also combine sailing with a long stop at anchor to relax and enjoy the scenery.

If you want to take part, the captain will teach you. He explains how the helm works, how to read the wind and how to trim a sail. It is not a formal lesson, but you learn something. And if you love taking photos, the sailboat is perfect for it: the deck, the sails unfurled, the horizon. The whole day is photogenic.

What kind of groups is a day on a sailboat for?

The sailboat works well for small groups of 2 to 12 people. It is ideal if you are looking for something calmer and with character: couples who want to spend the day alone on the water, families with children who want something different from the beach, or groups of friends who prefer a relaxed plan to the typical speedboat.

It is also a trip many couples choose for special occasions: anniversaries, marriage proposals or simply a different kind of day. A sailboat has a romance that other boats do not. And if you are going with children, it is great because they can move around the deck, watch the captain handle the lines and sails, and even help a little if they want.

For groups celebrating birthdays or bachelor parties, the sailboat also works, but it depends on the style. If you want something more active, with a grill, loud music and room to move around, the boat trip to Gorriti Island or the boat trip to Solanas and Punta Ballena by motorboat may suit you better. But if your celebration is more intimate, the sailboat is perfect.

What does the trip include and what should you bring?

All sailboat trips include the captain, life jackets for adults and children and the fuel for whenever the engine is needed. The sailboat also has a bathroom and a kitchen on board.

Food and drinks are not included. You bring whatever you want to have during the day: sandwiches, fruit, snacks, cold drinks. If you would like something more elaborate, we can arrange finger-food catering delivered to the boat. It is optional, and we arrange it when you book.

Checklist of useful things to bring

  • Sunscreen and a cap: the sun is strong on the water, even on cloudy days.
  • A towel and swimsuit if you plan to swim.
  • Comfortable clothes and non-slip shoes. Flip-flops are fine, but if it is cool bring something warmer.
  • Sunglasses.
  • Your own food and drinks in a cooler or backpack.
  • A camera or phone with a charged battery for photos.

The sailboat has room to store your things, so there is no need to hold back. And if you are going with children, bring something to keep them entertained while sailing: a deck of cards, a light ball or headphones with music.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Sailing depends on the wind and the state of the sea. If the weather is not suitable on the day of your booking, we reschedule the trip for another day that suits you. If you cannot change the date, we refund your money. We do not want you to go out if conditions are not safe or if you will not enjoy it.

This happens more in winter, when the wind is more irregular and the sea can be choppy. In summer it is less common, but there are still days when it is better not to go out. The captain checks the forecast before every trip and lets you know in good time if the date needs to change.

If the wind is very light, we use the engine so the trip is still enjoyable. It is not the same as pure sailing, but you still enjoy a day on the water. And if the wind is too strong, we simply do not go out. Safety comes first.

Can you combine the sailboat with other trips?

Yes, you can plan a day that combines sailing with other activities. For example, sailing toward Gorriti Island and anchoring there for a swim. You can also combine it with the Isla de Lobos boat tour on a long day: we sail to the island, skirt the sea lion colony and the lighthouse, and then anchor nearby so you can swim with the sea lions around you.

If you are in Punta del Este for several days, another option some groups choose is to do an early fishing trip one day and spend another day sailing. It depends on how many days you have and what you feel like doing. Everything is discussed beforehand, and the captain will tell you what is feasible depending on the day and sea conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need to know how to swim to go sailing?

It is not mandatory, but if you plan to swim from the boat, you need to know how to swim or wear a life jacket. The captain is with you, but he is not a lifeguard.

Does the sailboat go out all year round?

Yes, we have trips all year round. In winter the weather is more changeable, but you can still sail on nice days. We recommend bringing warm clothes and a windbreaker.
